My teaching placement is being facilitated by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service where I teach on the faculty of medical trainers. I teach a range of ages but all operational Firefighters. A few easy excuses came up, strike action being the main one and others in my head. Eventually I was pressed to complete a external observation. I have mixed opinions of my lecturer which may have added to the avoidance of an observation, I just don't think she "gets it". Due to the distance of my placement the course leader came to observe me, which although a higher position was surprisingly reassuring.
I had a 30/40 min observation of me teaching First Aid to a class of 10, mixed abilities and ages. once I relaxed into it there was no problems. After in my feedback was positive and we discussed cultural and traditional teaching formats which apply to the Fire Service and how more up to date or modern methods may not actually be appropriate.
Overall a stressful but pleasant outcome.
